In Jacmel, Haiti, free-spirited Marie Madeleine works as a sex worker. Ironically, her brothel is located in front of an evangelical church, where Joseph is a devout believer and amateur photographer. Their lives cross, and they develop an unlikely bond. As Joseph's faith wavers, she draws him into a world of desire, discovery and freedom.

Maria Madeleine is the second feature film written and directed by Haitian Gessica Généus, who stars in the main role. The film premiered at Cannes earlier this year, earning positive reviews for its vibrant palette and balance between fantasy and raw reality, while recognising Généus as an authentic new voice in cinema from a country facing many socio-political and humanitarian challenges and rarely seen on the big screen.

Interviewed by Manon Durand in Cannes, Gessica Généus explored her vision of the relationship between the two main characters and the possibility of genuine friendship: “ I wonder if this relationship between men and women is also biased and painful because we never really took the time to look at it in a non-sexual way. In friendships, we have time to do it, because there’s no sex involved. In the end, it doesn’t matter if Joseph is gay or not. What matters to me is if there is space to explore who he wants to be”.
