Minnie has always been happy to stay in the background. Quiet and introverted, she is content to let others take the lead, especially her outgoing, talented best friend, whose star-like quality seems to fill every room. When her friend is tragically killed in a car accident, Minnie’s world is shattered. She has lost the one person who truly understood her, only to discover that everyone else seems to be claiming they were her best friend too. Despite its heartbreaking subject matter, MOUSE is filled with bittersweet humour, warmth and humility. The story builds towards a chaotic and comic school variety performance, leaving us wondering how its shy, reluctant wallflower will ever make it through.

Amid her grief, Minnie forms an unexpected relationship with her friend’s mother. As they navigate their loss together, the two find comfort and understanding in one another.

Sophie Okonedo is sensational as a grieving mother, while Katherine Mallen Kupferer delivers a sensitive, relatable performance reminiscent of ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET. Together, they offer two perspectives on motherhood, grief and girlhood.

This is subject matter that might sound heavy, but the difficult feelings dredged up never overwhelm the film’s gentle, character-driven approach
