Starring Academy Award nominees Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, Fjord is a Romanian-Norwegian written, produced, and directed by Cristian Mungiu. Winner of this year’s Palme D’or at Cannes, Fjord is based on a true story which examines the intersections of truth and perspective. It begins as the conservation Gheorghiu family move back to their remote progressive Norwegian village. As the neighbours begin to suspect child abuse from the Gheorgiu family, a swift court case ensues with their children being removed from their care. Despite the stark tension of the events on screen, Mungiu creates pastoral scenes highlighting the Norwegian wilderness, filmed masterfully by Tudor Vladimir Panduru (The President’s Cake, 2025). A thought-provoking film, in which each character and their values are examined under a microscope. Mungiu observes this microcosm of society yet reserves judgement in his filmmaking, leaving the viewer to decide what they think is right.
