My Brother's Wedding (1983)

Pierce is a young Black man living in South Central Los Angeles. Family is an ever important part of Pierce’s life, indeed he works closely with his parents at a dry cleaners they operate. Pierce’s brother is getting married to a woman whom he doesn’t like, possibly due to their different backgrounds, him thinking of her as someone incredibly privileged who hasn’t worked for it. He constantly argues with his family about this and the fact that he doesn’t want to be Best Man at his brother’s wedding. Whilst this is all going on, together with the day to day life of the characters Pierce interacts with at the dry cleaners, one of Pierce’s old friends is released from jail, leading to extra turmoil. This brand new restoration is the perfect way to see this underseen gem of a film. Both funny and incredibly moving, it’s a classic of New Black cinema.
