Based on the Colm Toibin short story of the same name, Andrew Haigh’s new film is a powerful drama about a father and son dealing with the disappearance of their wife/mother in a blizzard. The original story was set in the Pyrenees, but the film is set in Canada, although the story is almost identical. The key relationship is between the father and son, Mike, who decides to try to find his wife even though the chances of doing so are remote. Equally vital is the issue of Mike’s sexuality and the impact that that will have on the way he and his father understand each other.
