Petra Volpe’s English language feature debut ‘Frank & Louis’ brings us into the world of a prisoner-carer programme, The Yellow Coats, which offers prisoners the chance to become carers for elderly prisoners, suffering with disease such as dementia. Volpe depicts a tender relationship between the incarcerated Frank (Kingsley Ben-Adir) who cares for Louis (Rob Morgan). Initially, their relationship is strained, with Louis’ dementia redefining the rules of a typical friendship, meaning Frank has to work for his affection each day. As they get closer both Frank and Louis begin to reexamine their lives, with Frank reckoning with his violent past and Louis dealing with the loss of the memories that put him in prison in the first place. Volpe masterfully crafts a film full of hope, compassion, and empathy. While not excusing the behaviour of the prisoners, she shines a light towards the programmes that foster true change and community within these spaces.
