Dominga Sotomayor is one of the most representative contemporary female Chilean filmmakers. La Perra (The Bitch), her fifth feature film, was adapted from the novel of the same name written by Colombian author Pilar Quintana

As in her previous films, Sotomayor explores unspoken traumas. In La Perra, Silvia, a middle-aged woman living on a remote island, rescues a puppy called Yuri, named as a daughter that she never had, but also the name of a popular Latin American singer whose pieces marked a generation. Yuri became a tender companion in all Silvia’s daily activities, but soon the dog disappears, bringing back memories of a childhood trauma.

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2026, where Yuri won the longstanding top Palm Dog Award.

The wind, the sound of the sea, and the warm sunsets form a perfect frame for this tender, intimate, and strong tale of longing motherhood.
