Their Town begins and ends on a stage. Abby is the lead in the school play; Matt is part of the production design team. From completely different social circles, they have barely crossed paths until their director asks Matt to step in as Abby’s co-lead at the last minute.
What follows is an unexpected evening in which two teenagers get to know each other in the most charming, sweet and genuine way. Together, they explore their town, revisit places from their childhoods and gradually discover that the versions of themselves they present to the world are very different from the realities behind closed doors.
Although they come from very different family backgrounds, both have experienced difficulties for very different reasons. As the hours pass, they open up to each other with an honesty they rarely share with anyone else, forming a deep trust and surprising connection.
Directed by Katie Aselton and written by her husband Mark Duplass, the film stars their daughter Ora Duplass as Abby and introduces Chosen Jacobs as Matt. With its intimate, naturalistic performances and gentle, conversational pacing, Their Town recalls the warmth and romantic intimacy of the Before trilogy.
