Based on the book of the same name by Keiran Goddard who grew up in Birmingham, I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning follows a friendship group of five who grew up in social housing in the Midlands. We meet them as they’re just entering their 30s and this group of friends like to party and enjoy life; they share such a close bond it’s almost familial. But as lives move on and the group become older and more prone to the banalities of life responsibilities, the partying lifestyle becomes interspersed with sadness and anxiety as many life factors become less like the hopes they had for their futures, be it themes of work, isolation, betrayal, love, family, addiction, or for some, trying to escape the past. The narrative shifts through the perspectives of each of the lead characters, and the audience gets to know each one of them both individually and collectively as part of their close friendship group. It won the Director’s Fortnight Audience Award at Cannes FIlm Festival 2026.
