Eight years after Cold War, Oscar-winning filmmaker Paweł Pawlikowski returns with another exquisitely crafted black-and-white drama.

In 1949, Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann returns to Germany after sixteen years in exile, accompanied by his daughter Erika, played by the brilliant Sandra Hüller. Their journey takes them through the ruins of a country now divided between East and West, where Mann is celebrated as a cultural hero while being forced to confront uncomfortable questions about exile, identity and the Germany he left behind.

As political tensions mount, so too do those within the family. Elegant, intimate and packed with ideas, Fatherland explores what it means to return to a home that no longer exists, and the personal cost of living in the shadow of history.
