On the brink of the 1973 Chilean coup, two CIA agents make their way to Easter Island for a trip they won’t forget.

John Malkovich is Chris, an eccentric and erratic old man who’s drifted from the CIA handbook. He’s surly, talks openly about upcoming secret missions, and makes moves on women 40 years his junior. Accompanied by the exasperated Lee (a fantastic Sam Rockwell), Chris is dragged along to Easter Island, to see the heads up close, and do a bit of sightseeing while they wait for their next mission from higher ups. Cynical after years of assassinations and coups, Chris holds no bars when faced with rebellious young students, revealing far too much about the upcoming CIA operations.

Fans of director Martin McDonagh (Banshees of Inishirin, In Bruges) will recognise the familiar setting of a bickering duo, but McDonough approaches these characters with a care and perspective that only comes with age.

Wild Horse Nine features stand out performances from all involved, with Malkovich at the absolute top of his game.
