Join us for a very special celebration of Ken Loach’s 90th birthday and the 20th anniversary of one of his most acclaimed films, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, followed by a conversation with Ken Loach & Cillian Murphy.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, The Wind That Shakes the Barley is a powerful drama set during the Irish War of Independence and Civil War. Cillian Murphy stars as Damien, a young doctor drawn into the republican struggle alongside his brother Teddy, played by Pádraic Delaney, as political ideals, personal loyalties and family bonds are pushed to breaking point.

Following this special anniversary screening, Ken Loach and Cillian Murphy will come together for an extended conversation chaired by film critic Helen O’Hara.

Twenty years on, they will revisit the making of the film and their collaboration, as well as exploring its Irish history and context, the questions of identity, independence and division at the heart of the story, and the film’s continuing resonance.

The conversation will also look beyond The Wind That Shakes the Barley, reflecting on Loach and Murphy’s remarkable careers, their approaches to filmmaking and performance, and the paths their work has taken in the two decades since the film was made.

The screening begins at 5pm, with the conversation following at approximately 7.05pm and running until around 8.30pm.

A rare opportunity to hear Ken Loach and Cillian Murphy reflect together on the film, its history and twenty years of filmmaking since.
