Mārama is a startling, innovative horror debut from British-Māori director Taratoa Shepherd. Set in the storm-swept moors of Victorian Yorkshire, a young Māori woman named Mary (Ariāna Osborne) arrives in search of information about her birth family, prompted by a letter from a mysterious stranger. Upon discovering that this unknown man has recently passed away, Mary finds herself coerced into employment by a wealthy whaler, Sir Nathaniel Cole (Toby Stephens). As she moves into Cole’s home, now working as a governess to his young daughter, she discovers that he is an obsessive, fetishistic collector of Māori cultural artefacts, with a dark past involving the ‘harvesting’ of the waters around her home.

Shot in just 24 days, Mārama is a film designed to be both confrontational and cathartic; the history of Aotearoa New Zealand is undeniably, violently influenced by colonialism, and Mārama does not shy away from this, with a breathtakingly brutal climax. It is part horror, part thriller, and part spiritual awakening, and an undeniably powerful addition to the legacy of indigenous horror filmmaking.
