British-Nigerian Olive Nwosu’s feature Lady showcases the solitary life of cab driver Lady (Jessica Gabriel’s Ujah) which is disrupted when Pinky (Amanda Oruh), her childhood friend who is now a sex-worker, comes back into her life with a lucrative proposition. Lady becomes the personal cab driver for her group of free-spirited sex-workers. As Lady travels through the congested streets of Lagos driving the women to bookings each night, she begins to reexamine her city, her past, and her trauma with a new perspective. Set in the midst of an unstable political backdrop in Lagos, Lady examines female friendships and gender politics in bold yet thoughtful manner. Lady is underpinned with a smooth Afro-jazz soundtrack, including songs from popular Nigerian artists Little Simz and Obongjayar. Winner of the Special Jury Award for an Acting Ensemble at Sundance, “Lady" is a beautifully vibrant film highlighting female friendships and empowerment.
