A disquieting Spanish film about father-daughter estrangement, The Beloved features Javier Bardem as a celebrated director trying to assert his authority over his actress daughter. Reunited on the set of his latest film after years apart, old resentments and unresolved tensions begin to surface, blurring the boundaries between their fraught personal relationship and the work they are making together.

A film about a film shoot, The Beloved strips away any starry-eyed notions of the movie-making process, exposing the egos, compromises and shifting power dynamics behind the camera. At its heart, though, is an intimate and increasingly uncomfortable portrait of a father and daughter struggling with love, resentment and the weight of their shared past.

One of the highlights of the 2025 festival was Sentimental Value, in which a film director tries to work with his estranged actress/daughter. By coincidence, this is the same subject matter here, and yet the films are completely unlike each other.

A fabulous film about filmmaking. ★★★★★
