Chronicles from the Siege

Written and directed by the Palestinian-Syrian filmmaker Abdallah Al-Khatib and drawing on his own experience growing up in the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus, Chronicles from the Siege was named ‘best first feature’ at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival.

The film follows a number of ordinary people trapped in a beleaguered city as hunger, cold and isolation strip life down to its essentials. Variety called it a ‘harrowing, poignant, sometimes darkly hilarious dispatch from the frontlines of a violent blitz’.

It is, says Middle East Eye, a ‘bracingly original’ film which offers ‘a starkly different vision of Gaza … populated by strong-willed, deeply flawed, and palpably human characters’.
