About the film

Coming-of-age movies are a dime a dozen; while most films about Native American characters are some combination of caricature, stereotype and cliche. What makes Riley Keogh and Gina Gammell’s award-winning film so special is that it is the product of collaboration with the people who are the focus of the film. The two women spent years on the project, getting to know the Lakota people of Pine Ridge, casting the right (non-professional) actors and insistent that the film should be representative of the lived life and experience of its characters. Film critics were universally impressed by the quality of the end product.
