Bath Fringe is, annually, whatever the artists, performers, promoters, venue managers and arts enthusiasts of Bath want it to be. The bulk of the Fringe Festival is just that: people inspired by this or that group, artform, period, theatre style, method, getting together to present it under the Fringe banner. In some cases they're people who do things in Bath all year round, joining the Fringe so a different audience can notice them and get interested in what they do; in others they're groups that only get together for one-offs; in still others they're people from around about, or further away (even internationally) who think The Fringe is a good time to visit Bath to get noticed. There is also a group called Bath Fringe, a volunteer cooperative of artists, performers, promoters, venue managers and arts enthusiasts (again), who get together to put on an additional ‘flagship' part of the programme: in recent years this has comprised a street & outdoor programme over several days, kids' events, often a club, and always a major venue that we programme - for the last few years, a Spiegeltent. The committee and its associated two very-part-time workers also make sure that as many artforms, audiences and areas of town as we can are covered during the 17+ days of the festival, that people with good ideas get some of the help they need to put them into practice, and that some money is raised so that we, the artists of Bath and around - and audiences from everywhere - can afford to do as much of it as possible. In this, it's not just an organisation, but more of a movement (yes, we know what that sounds like) of people who come together, work hard for free or a very reduced rate, to make The Fringe, in all its details, happens, grow... follow its nature.
